Explaining it to children

At times our bodies behave in ways that we can’t control, we have some big feelings or worries that stop us from doing the things we love. This doesn’t mean that there is something wrong with us, we all feel this way sometime but when the feelings don’t go away we may need help from a play therapist.

Before the sessions start the adults will meet and then you will do some activities with the therapist to help them get to know you little better. After this you will meet with the therapist every week for special Play Time.

What is Special Play Time?

Play therapy is a special space that you get to play in for 45-50 minutes every week. In this space you can play almost anything that you like and if there is anything that you can’t do, the therapist will let you know. The main rule is that everyone is safe.

There are lots of different things to play with in the playroom and you get to choose what and when you play. At times you will get messy and that’s ok too. The therapist will have all sorts of things like dolls, dress ups, small toys, sand trays, playdough, water, craft and lots more. All of which are there to help you share your story and feelings.

At times the session may seem fun and others they may feel tiring. Its ok, the adults in your life know this and they will be ready to support you after the sessions. They are there to talk but only if you want to.

We look forward to seeing you in the playroom.
